Boxing fans and experts were divided into two parties before Saturday nights WBC heavyweight title bout between champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 K.o.’s) and mandatory challenger Odlanier Solis (17-1, 12 K.o.’s). Some predicted a Klitschko win, either by clear cut decision or late technical knockout after punishing Solis. Others felt that the Olympic champion from Cuba might be able to outbox and outsmart the elder Klitschko brother. However, virtually no one expected the fight to be over within a single round.

The crowd was obviously disappointed and booed heavily when Michael Buffer announced the official time of 3:00 minutes. The punch that floored the challenger from Cuba was on the mark but did not look devastating – although it is hard to discuss the impact of a punch without actually being hit by it. Solis got back on his feet but his legs buckled and the referee rightfully called a halt to the action.

The previously unbeaten Solis later stated that he injured his right knee after the punch. “I strangely twisted my knee while falling. ** like this happens.” The challenger was brought to the hospital, were the injury was later confirmed. He had indeed. Solis connected with quick shots throughout the opening stanza, especially to the body of Klitschko. It looked like the Cuban might in fact be the biggest challenge to the WBC champion since Klitschko’s war against Lennox Lewis in 2003. That was until the Ukrainian knocked Solis – who moved right into the shot – down. Klitschko tried to control the action with his rangy jab and had success hitting Solis coming in. “I was prepared for a longer fight”, Klitschko said. “I’m disappointed as well and sorry for the fans in attendance and watching on television. But I’m still the champion and that is the most important thing to me.” It was the sixth successful title defense for Klitschko in his second reign as WBC champion and his quickest world title bout as well.

Next up for Vitali Klitschko seems to be a bout against Polish former cruiserweight titlelist Tomasz Adamek later this year. Contracts between both camps are already signed, but more details are not available at this time. First, however, Klitschko will be helping his younger brother Wladimir, the IBF/WBO/IBO champion, prepare for his unification battle against WBA titleholder David Haye either on June 25 or July 2.
