DAVID HAYE is set for surgery on an Achilles tendon injury. The former WBA heavyweight champion remained in hospital following his 11th-round stoppage defeat by Tony Bellew on Saturday night. Haye, 36, went over on his ankle in the sixth round of the clash at the O2 and managed to survive another five rounds despite being barely able to move around the ring. He left the arena on his feet but was aided by two of his team and was whisked straight to hospital. Haye stayed in hospital yesterday before it was decided he needed to go under the knife to repair the damaged tendon. He is now expected to be out for at least six months which, at 36, could mean the end of his boxing career on the back of this damaging defeat. Haye travelled to Munich on Tuesday night to be checked over by former Bayern Munich club doctor Hans Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt. His team denied he went there because of an Achilles injury after reports emerged he could even pull out of the bout just days before it. They insisted he was fully fit and ready for the heavyweight clash. But more questions have been raised about his fitness after he went over on his Achilles in the sixth round. Haye could barely move around the ring as Bellew rushed in trying to finish him as the Londoner lay on the ropes trying to surive. The Hayemaker then emerged with strapping around his ankle and calf for the eighth which was then later removed.
