Despite the string of controversies he got himself into these last few months, Filipinos wer e as enthusiastic to watch boxing hero Manny Pacquiao’s final fight on April 10 (April 9 in Las Vegas), where he unanimously beat American contender Timothy Bradley for the third time.
The main fight, which aired exclusively on free TV via GMA Network’s PacBrad III, registered a commanding 40.3 percent household rating in National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) based on overnight data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.
Moreover, the “Pacquiao-Bradley III” main event rated 14.1 points higher than GMA’s airing of the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, Battle for Greatness, which recorded 26.2 percent in NUTAM back in May 2015.
According to network executives, they consider Pacquiao not just the “Pambansang Kamao” and the people’s champion, but also one of their very own, as it was in GMA where the boxing champ pursued his erstwhile career in acting and hosting.
Because of this, Pacquiao was given a homecoming fit for the People’s Champ as GMA Network joined the nation in welcoming its Kapuso, Manny Pacquiao, upon his arrival in the Philippines on April 14.
Fresh from his victory, the boxing legend was personally congratulated by GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe Gozon, president and COO Gilberto Duavit Jr. and Executive Vice President and CFO Felipe Yalong, along with other Network officers and distinguished guests.
The Pambansang Kamao arrived to enthusiastic applause from his countrymen as he sat down to a breakfast of champions, followed by a welcome parade that took him from Makati to Quezon City to see his many supporters.
