Manny Pacquiao Will Take Tests for Mayweather, But Not With USADA
In a statement I doubt is going to make Manny Pacquiao look any better to the skeptics and critics, Bob Arum says that the Pacquiao camp has agreed to take unlimited, random drug testing for any potential fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr, but not with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). USADA has handled the drug testing for Mayweather's fights with Shane Mosley, and is handling the testing for Mayweather's September 17 fight with Victor Ortiz.
Arum said the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), the body Mayweather wants to handle the tests, is not a neutral organization and that there are other groups that can "handle the test under the supervision of the athletic commission respective of the state where the fight is going to be held."
Now realize that we're talking about USADA here, and not some fly-by-night organization that just cropped up out of nowhere and is being financed solely by Mayweather or anything like that. This is a serious organization. The United States Congress has recognized USADA as "the official anti-doping agency for Olympic, Pan American and Paralympic sport in the United States." That's pretty heavy. That's pretty legit.
I mean, this is all very predictable. Pacquiao, Arum and Top Rank will now be accused of trying to find, say, some fly-by-night organization to handle the testing. Someone they trust, because the official anti-doping agency of the United States Olympic athletes isn't, um, "neutral," or good enough. I don't care if you're a Pacquiao "nut-hugger" or "hater" (I used these idiotic words correctly, right?) or if you "don't really give a s**t about any of this anymore." This is a weird little turn that I don't think does anyone any good. Why bring it up now? They won't even be potentially discussing the details of a fight contract until December.
Logically, this should be sort of a point to Team Floyd in the ongoing PR battle, but I never really know what to expect anymore, so you tell me.
