Lennox Lewis has declared that Deontay Wilder is the best heavyweight in the world today. Britain’s former undisputed champion, who now works as a pundit for PBC on FOX in America, has picked the Alabama native ahead of the UK’s current crop and explained his reasons for the choice. The WBC heavyweight champion defended his belt in a rematch with Luis Ortiz in stunning fashion on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Despite a controversial draw with Tyson Fury in December, Wilder still has his unbeaten record and this is seemingly key in Lewis’ eyes. When asked who he ranks as top dog today, Lennox told media: “Deontay. I say that because of Fury’s last fight [against Otto Wallin]. “That last fight kinda dropped him a couple points.” In the aftermath of the Wilder vs Fury draw, many tabbed the ‘Gypsy King’ as the world’s best, but this has now changed for Lewis after he had a tougher time than expected against Wallin. When asked about how he sees Anthony Joshua’s conquerer Andy Ruiz Jr in the mix, Lewis replied: “He’s there. “He still has a lot to prove. He’s still gotta get past this second fight with Joshua. “But, you know, if you’re asking me the number one and two, it’s Deontay and Fury.”
