Benavidez (24-0, 21 KO) definitely will have fans calling for a matchup with the Canelo-Plant winner if he beats Uzcategui. The 24-year-old is undefeated, a two-time titleholder (losing the belt outside the ring on both occasions), and an exciting fighter. He will also pretty clearly be the No. 2 man at 168 lbs if he beats Uzcategui and Canelo beats Plant.

Uzcategui (31-4, 26 KO) is a somewhat different story. He’s a former titlist, too, but the 30-year-old Venezuelan was soundly beaten by Plant in 2019, and while he’s mostly been off boxing fans’ radar since then, he also lost to Lionell Thompson at the end of 2019, and his three wins since the Plant fight have all been against club fighters. But if he upset Benavidez, he’d have the momentum again. Maybe fans wouldn’t be demanding Canelo-Uzcategui if they both win, but at the same time, who else would there be at 168? John Ryder or David Lemieux? Fedor Chudinov? Carlos Gongora?

Benavidez (24-0, 21KOs) fought on the network this past March, scoring an 11th round stoppage of Ronald Ellis at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The event was the first for the unbeaten 24-year-old since losing the WBC super middleweight title outside the ring for a second time, missing weight ahead of a 10th round stoppage at Alexis Angulo last August also at Mohegan Sun.

The scale fail prompted a brief discussion among his team—which includes widely respected promoter Sampson Lewkowicz—for the still-growing former titlist to move up to light heavyweight before deciding to remain at the weight. Benavidez further insisted to face a credible contender, with Uzcategui on the short list though ultimately settling for Ellis. Benavidez moved forward with the fight, with the win securing his place as the number-one contender to his twice-held WBC title which is currently in the possession of pound-for-pound king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
