Full Mayweather-Pacquiao coverage
Is there a chance that when Floyd Mayweather steps into the ring on May 2 the majority of those in attendance at the MGM Grand will be rooting against him? It might seem unlikely considering Mayweather, an American, currently resides in Las Vegas -- the location of the fight -- and his opponent, Manny Pacquiao, was born and raised in the Philippines.
But according to promoter Bob Arum, in the eyes of America, Mayweather isn't the hero of this fight. Instead, Arum told Sky Sports that Pacquiao is the fighter America will be backing on May 2.
"If Pacquiao wins, it's a significant victory for Filipinos and lot of people in the U.S.," Arum said. "Most Americans you would think would be rooting for Mayweather, but the contrast is true. The majority of the American population is rooting for Manny."
Now is probably a good time to bring up the fact that as the founder of Top Rank, Arum isn't exactly an unbiased voice in this fight. That being said, Arum further explained his claim.
"It's slowly developing into a culture clash," he said. "Floyd Mayweather is outstanding at marketing himself and in his own words represents ostentatious materialism."
He continued, saying Mayweather "talks about how much money he makes and the cars he drives," while Pacquiao "feels a tremendous obligation to give back and engage in charitable endeavours."
