VITALI BRUTALIZES BRIGGS, BUT FIGHT GOES DISTANCE
By Scott Shaffer
Vitali Klitschko W12 Shannon Briggs... In Hamburg, Germany, Vitali Klitschko brutalized Shannon Briggs over twelve rounds to retain the WBC heavyweight title. It was a thorough domination as Klitschko bloodied and lumped up Briggs' face, while Briggs didn't land a single significant punch. Briggs' effort wasn't the problem, as he tired to come forward, but he was too slow and unable to get inside Klitschko's jab. Afterwards, Briggs said Klitschko hits harder than George Foreman and is superior to Lennox Lewis, both of whom faced Briggs during their careers (although Briggs was Foreman's last fight). Klitschko won every minute of every round, and officially was credited with a 120-107 (twice) and 120-105 shutout. The only two surprises were that Briggs never want down from Klitschko's heavy rights (which Klitschko landed virtually at will) and that Briggs' corner was perfectly was perfectly willing to let him absorb an unlimited amount of punches. Starting in the tenth round, Briggs began telling the referee he was alright after each Klitschko right. But make no mistake, if you care about Shannon Briggs, this fight was not easy to watch. |
