David Tua was knocked down for the first time of his career but escaped with a draw from his fight with Monte Barrett in New Jersey today that keeps his comeback alive - just.
Referee Randy Neuman deducted a point from Tua in the final round for throwing Barrett to the canvas, before Barrett dropped a desperate Tua with just seconds remaining.
That 10-7 round against Tua left most observers thinking the veteran heavyweight had lost the fight – and Barrett furious and the crowd at the Tropicana casino in Atlantic City booing when the judges returned a draw.
Two judges scored the fight 113-113 and the third a 115-111 result to Tua, with Barrett saying: “The sport is not pure like the fighters are.’’
Former Commonwealth Games medallist Danny Codling said Tua was “very fortunate to come away with the draw’’.
The 37-year-old Barrett had declared in the days before the fight that it would be his last and the expectation was that Tua would be a comfortable victor, with most eyes on a likely rematch with former world champion Hasim Rahman later this year.
Tua stalked a defensive Barrett in the early rounds and when he threw combinations, appeared to rock the New Yorker.
In the fifth, Barrett was visibly dazed by a stiff jab to the head, and his cornermen told him at the end of that round: “You want to win this fight, you don’t want to go out with a decision.’’
But the superbly-fit Barrett lifted his workrate, improved his footwork and picked his scoring shots to leave the fight evenly balanced as it entered the final rounds.
Tua several times appeared to have Barrett troubled but couldn’t deliver a decisive flurry of blows.
When the final round began, it seemed Tua would need a knockout to guarantee a victory and in his desperation, threw Barrett to the canvas and had a point deducted.
Tua threw caution to the wind and tried again for a knockout but Barrett counter-punched off the ropes and dropped him.
The draw meant Tua could retain his WBO Oriental and Asia-Pacific belts and left his credibility as a heavyweight title contender mostly intact.
“I was trying to get it going… it seemed like nothing was going our way,’’ he said. |
