Audley Harrison claims David Haye has been knocked down during sparring

01.11.10 Audley Harrison today claimed world heavyweight champion David Haye had been floored by a veteran while sparring for their title bout in Manchester in 12 days time.

There has been plenty of trash talking in the build-up to British boxing's biggest clash for more than a decade and Harrison has now added to the ill-feeling by claiming the WBA holder was embarrassed by Tony Thompson in training.

'Tiger' Thompson was brought in by the Haye camp because, like Harrison, he is a southpaw. The 39-year-old's an unspectacular puncher but had apparently got the better of Haye during training for the bout at the MEN Arena.

Harrison, who is also 39, said: "I heard that Tony Thompson knocked David Haye down a few weeks ago. Tony isn't a puncher but if Tony has been able to knock him down then what I am going to do to him? The thing is David can do all the work in the gym on his muscles but that isn't going to put muscles on his chin and that's where I am going to hit him."

American Thompson has won all but two of his 36 professional fights and is ranked 12th by the WBC since losing in the 11th round against Wladimir Klitschko in 2008.

David Haye angers rape victims with slur on Audley Harrison

David Haye has always been calculating in his approach to promoting his bigger fights. Haye likes to shock. Remember this is the man who said he would “beat (Jean Marc) Mormeck like Rodney King” prior to his cruiserweight unification contest with the Frenchman.

He said that 7ft tall Russian Nikolai Valuev, from whom he took the World Boxing Association heavyweight belt, “had a stench” about him that sparring partners spoke of, and that he was “a freak, a mon-ster”, and he wore a t-shirt depicting himself holding the severed heads of the Klitschko brothers, printed in a men’s style magazine, which he threw in the face of Vitali Klitschko while the Ukrainian was having dinner with his wife.

Haye’s purpose – rightly or wrongly – is to eschew taste in favour of mak-ing noise with his acti-**. He started off, we might recall, with Frank Maloney, a master in self-publicity.

Nor is Haye the first fighter in boxing history to step over the line to promote a fight, at the risk of offending the general public. Two of the most well-known are Muhammad Ali famously calling Joe Frazier an “Uncle Tom” and Mike Tyson telling Lennox Lewis prior to their fight that he would eat his children – although Lewis did not actually have children at that time.

Haye may have overstepped the mark, nonetheless, with his remark that his fight with Audley Harrison, announced on Tuesday, would be “as one-sided as a gang-rape”. The comment, made to eight national news** journalists sitting in a huddle around him after the publicly-aired news conference on Sky Sports, was designed to shock, and dem**trate just how bitter Haye feels towards Harrison.

The group recoiled slightly at his comment. Women’s groups and rape victims reacted angrily to the comments, describing them as deeply insensitive.
Haye and Harrison were great friends, and shared many experiences, even rooming together as amateur boxers representing England. Haye was a teenager when Harrison won Commonwealth gold in 1998, followed by Olympic gold in 2000.

Haye was not selected for the Olympics, with light-heavyweight Courtney Fry favoured instead. Perhaps that rankles with Haye, whose style, belief and delivery is much more suited to the harsher realities of the professional sport. Conversely, Harrison, a much bigger specimen as an athlete, has meandered for 10 years as professional fighter, without really gaining any credibility. His chin, and mostly his heart for the fight, have been questioned. He has become something of a laughing stock. Haye called him “a c**piracy theorist, a national disgrace”. Harrison has looked far from world class. In a sense, this fight is about two egos. Haye has proved he can mix it with the heavyweights, but he must take it further. Thus far, Harrison has merely talked the talk, without challenging himself on a tightrope. This might just be his redemption, although Haye is displaying clear agitation that he has to fight Harrison. The winner will emerge with serious bragging rights. Though with the interest it will generate, both fighters will be winners financially.


海大嘴不但用言语刺激业余拳击时期和自己曾经同宿舍的哈里森，同时他的肮脏语言激怒了**受害者，原因是他将自己和哈里森的比赛形容为“as one-sided as a gang-rape”，也就是一边倒的“轮·奸”。

实际上托尼汤普森并不弱，从战绩看实力在哈里森之上。和小克比赛前除了初期点数输过一场之外没有败绩。他还击败过当年的新秀Dominick Guinn、点胜Vaughn Bean（这个人当时赛绩是44胜3负，和90年代末的老霍与穆勒都打满了全场），就算被小克KO后，他也KO了Chazz Witherspoon这个一度的希望之星。

不过汤普森的重拳不算强。按照可靠的消息，他是右利手，但却将右手当作前手，因此缺乏一击必杀的能力。34场胜利22场KO，KO率不算太高，1、2回合速胜的场次也不怎么多。哈里森在抨击海大嘴的时候说汤普森不是一个real puncher，其实就是在变相夸耀自己可以更轻松地搞定海耶。当然，哈里森确实是个牛皮贩子，光看他输给Sprott那么惨就知道他的水平了。Sprott是3回合KO哈里森，而最近哈里森的复仇也不过是12回合勉强KO。至于Dominick Guinn，当年汤普森的手下败将，但却击败过哈里森，并且两场比赛间隔2个月。
