1. Wladimir Klitschko (53-3)
Klitschko's plan to defend his belts against mandatory challenger Eddie Chambers in December is on hold because Klitschko suffered a left shoulder injury during his destruction of Ruslan Chagaev in June and had surgery that will keep him out of the ring probably until the spring.
Next: TBA.

2. Vitali Klitschko (38-2)
In 10 brutally destructive rounds, Klitschko hammered Cristobal Arreola into submission Sept. 26 to retain his title for the second time. It was a stellar performance and once again illustrated that in the heavyweight division there are the Klitschko brothers on one level and then everybody else.
Next: TBA.
3. Alexander Povetkin (17-0)
The 2004 Olympic gold medalist and one of Wladimir Klitschko's mandatory challengers has hired ESPN's own Teddy Atlas to train him in the United States. Povetkin is expected to fight this fall while awaiting a mandatory shot next year.
Next: TBA.
4. Eddie Chambers (35-1)
After dismantling Alexander Dimitrenko in Germany on July 4, Chambers became one of Wladimir Klitschko's mandatory challengers. It looked like they might meet in December, but that is off likely until the spring because of Klitschko's shoulder surgery. Now, Chambers probably will sit tight and wait for the shot, which should come around March.
Next: TBA.
5. Ruslan Chagaev (25-1-1)
In the wake of his disastrous outing against Wladimir Klitschko in June, Chagaev has replaced trainer Michael Timm with Magomed Schaburow with an eye toward returning to the ring in early 2010. His trainer is not why he lost to Klitschko. He lost because he was the far inferior fighter. Eddie Futch couldn't have helped him win.
Next: TBA.
6. Nikolai Valuev (50-1)
Valuev will defend his title against Haye, who gets an easier fight with the lumbering Valuev than he would have had he kept his word and signed a deal he had to challenge Vitali Klitschko for his version of the title.
Next: Nov. 7 vs. Haye.
7. Samuel Peter (32-3)
In his second fight with Top Rank, the former titleholder blew out no-hoper Ronald Bellamy in the second round on Sept. 15. Peter has had his two ducks. Time to step up again.
Next: TBA.
8. Oleg Maskaev (36-6)
The former titlist lost an arbitration case that allowed Vitali Klitschko to move on to an optional defense rather than be forced to fight a mandatory against the wholly undeserving Maskaev, whose schedule is up in the air now that a proposed eliminator with Arreola isn't happening.
Next: TBA.
9. Denis Boytsov (25-0)
The 23-year-old German-based Russian can box and punch. He's coming off an excellent sixth-round knockout performance against Taras Bidenko in June and heading back into the ring to face American journeyman Jason Gavern (18-5-3).
Next: Oct. 10 vs. Gavern.
10. Cristobal Arreola (27-1)
Arreola is nicknamed \"Nightmare\" and he must have been having one while Vitali Klitschko beat the hell out of him on the way to a 10th-round TKO on Sept. 26. Arreola still has a future, but to beat the top heavyweights he'll need to be in better condition and have a plan B. |
