I am a fighter
My name is Andre Ward. I was raised here in California. My dad he was a single parent. He raised me and my brother Johnson. He was my model and he is the most important figure in my life. In fifteen years old he was a heavyweight in Crismore high school, California. He told me about several rival between he and the other guy from some other school, that just fire me up. I told him I want to do this, and the point I have enough stories, I want to get in there and try it. When I got into the gym, I hit the bag with couple of punches, and look to the side move, Verger, who is my godfather and my trainer now; he gave me a lot of approve, at the end I heard my father just started talking to him and I think it only took one session that my father was sold. My father passed away from heart disease in 2002 at the age of 46. I would say that it was probably the roughest time that I have ever gone through as a young man, I was trying to find myself. I began to duple and dapple and start to get into trouble, little and little I hit the rock bottom, and Verse step right in. prepare for the gold medal was absolutely a long term goal for a young man. But something I felt was realistic. I remembered Verse counting down his hand and said “you know what we get seven years left”, and I looked up and he said “we got seven years left”. The next thing I knew I was trying out for the 2004 Olympic team. When I first won my gold medal, I just feel like I was stunned, you know it was hard for me to deal with when my father was not there. But I felt like accomplished something, you know I felt like I did it, this is something we plan to do, and this is our goal and I finally accomplished that, my dad was a athlete and I think he would cry. This sport is tough I tell you, it takes a lot away from you. I have my family on my mind quite a bit, this is how we eat, and this is serious, I have learned the sport, I have taken my legs, I have learned the to come back and how to adapt the atmosphere, it has been a good career so far but I am reaching for greatness, I think about my father a lot and I think he will be godly proud and excited about what is going on in my life right now. My name is Andre Ward, and I am a fighter. |
