Artur Beterbiev doesn’t want to talk about the future because he has a fight on Saturday, his first in 17 months.

The light heavyweight IBF and WBC titleholder from Russia, who has stopped each of his 15 opponents, is scheduled to defend against countryman Adam Deines at Khodynka Ice Palace in Moscow (ESPN).

The fight was supposed to take place in January but it was pushed back after the champ tested positive for COVID-19.

“It’s difficult for year for everyone,” he said in English. “And now I‘m feeling good. I had very good preparation, a very good camp in Russia. And we are ready for the fight.”

Deines (19-1-1, 10 KOs) is ranked No. 5 by the IBF even though he lost a wide decision in his only fight against a notable opponent, Fanlong Meng. The southpaw, who lives in Germany, is 2-0 against journeymen since then.

Beterbiev sad he’s taking nothing for granted.

“We studied Adam, my next opponent,” he said. “We watched some videos. We have a couple of strategies for this fight. He has good professional experience, good amateur experience. He’s a good fighter, a good boxer, you know.

“I try to be ready for this fight 100 percent.”

Beterbiev could probably beat Deines at less than 100 percent, or so the odds imply. The titleholder is a 17½-1 favorite (BetMGM).

That means he and his team will be seeking another challenger soon. The obvious choice is WBA beltholder Dmitry Bivol (17-0, 11 KOs), which would allow Beterbiev to hold three of the four major titles.

Joe Smith Jr. and Maxim Vlasov are scheduled to fight for the vacant WBO title on April 10.

And there is the possibility of facing Mexican star Canelo Alvarez, a super middleweight champion. Beterbiev was asked about that possibility recently and was happy to respond. “I’m in,” he said.

Of course, if we were to ask him now, he would point us back to the fight on Saturday.

“Right now I’m focused on March 20,” he said. “If you want to ask me something for future, ask me please after fight.”
